| No Deal, Bubba by MARK WATKINS Tuesday October 20, 1998 Liberals (including some of my misguided colleagues here) believe that perjury is not an impeachable offense. Therefore, merely lying to the people is less than, say, treason. Liberals argue that the President did not ask or tell Monica to lie about their illicit relationship, although the two of them clearly reached an understanding that they would lie as necessary to keep it secret. Therefore, a conspiracy of lies is less than, say, treason. Liberals argue that Clinton did not obstruct justice. Therefore, obfuscation is less than, say, extortion. Liberals argue that Clinton did not commit adultery, which is not an impeachable offense anyhow. Therefore, fondling another woman and receiving oral sex from her is less than, say, an illicit affair. |

Liberals argue that, in any case, none of this directly threatened the national security of the United States or Clinton's job performance. Therefore, impeachment is moot. Once again, liberals "just don't get it." Lying to the people, persuading and conspiring with others to lie, obstructing justice and dallying with another woman comprise conduct that offends the sensibilities of the average American. One of my sociology professors was fond of saying that in society "the average American" does not exist because he is constantly moving toward or away from extreme values, either archaic or revolutionary. This was his way of saying, "The pendulum swings." The professor didn't "get it," either. The pendulum has never swung and will never swing so far as to define such conduct as Clinton's as anything less than wrong. And in the White House, such conduct is incredibly wrong. The professor also was fond of pointing out that great men are still just men: exceptional in some ways, typical in others and in still others, flawed. Their greatness lies in their ability to rise above their flaws. This was his way of saying, "You have to take the bad with the good." No, we don't. This President was reduced to not only immoral but also criminal conduct merely by a young woman hiking her skirt. For a man Clinton's age that is a shameful lack of personal self-control. For a President it is a weakness that imperils the entire nation. What else turns his head, and what (or whom) would he surrender to possess it? Clinton must be impeached. If the House fails to find precedent for same then it must set precedent. The House -- and the allegedly more venerable Senate -- must rise and declare for all to hear: this, the people will not tolerate. Further, Americans must not allow the House and Senate to conspire with the White House to subvert the impeachment process whereby, in lieu of impeachment, Clinton submits to censure. The Republicans insist they are the better leaders, imbued with clearer vision and "the courage to make the tough decisions." Okay, fellas -- prove it: lead. Impeach the bastard and remove him from office. And tell the White House to quit calling. There will be no deal, Bubba. |
