AN OVERVIEW OF VERNON JORDAN:

AP Photo
Political affiliation: Longtime friend of Bill Clinton.
Role: Suspected, along with the president, of advising Ms. Lewinsky
to lie under oath about whether she ever had an affair with the
president.
Background: Jordan is well-known as a Democratic power broker as well as
a civil rights leader and has long been a confidante of the president.
In a press conference on Jan. 22, Mr. Jordan said that Ms. Lewinsky
told him "in no uncertain terms that she did not have a sexual
relationship with the president."
He went on to say that Ms. Lewinsky was referred to him by Betty
Currie, a secretary to the president, and he confirmed that he
had recommended Ms. Lewinsky for several jobs in New York. He
has also confirmed that he put her in touch with a lawyer to advise
her in the Paula Jones case.
After appearing before Kenneth Starr's grand jury for the second
day in a row on March 5, Mr. Jordan met with the press and said
there was no "quid pro quo" arrangement with Ms. Lewinsky of a
job for an affidavit. He emphasized that he has told no one to
lie.
He also said that he "kept the president of the United States
informed about [his] activities."
In a March 5 Washington Post report revealing more details from
the president's deposition to Paula Jones' lawyers, the president
was said to have explained that his secretary, Betty Currie, initiated
the effort to find Ms. Lewinsky a job. The Post also reported
that the president told Paula Jones' lawyers that Mr. Jordan kept
him informed of his efforts to find Ms. Lewinsky a job.
Jordan's help came at a convenient time for Lewinsky. She left
her Pentagon job on Dec. 26, allegedly met with Clinton on Dec.
28 and then was in New York on Dec. 30 for job interviews made
possible by Mr. Jordan.
Kenneth Starr would like to show that this wasn't merely a good
turn on Jordan's part but an attempt to comfortably place Ms.
Lewinsky away from D.C. and to keep her comfortable. It wouldn't
be Jordan's first political favor. When former associate attorney
general Webster Hubbell was unemployed and under investigation
by Starr, Jordan helped arrange a $100,000 consulting contract
for him. Starr suspects Jordan of supplying Hubbell with hush
money.
Vernon Jordan reportedly earns more than $1 million a year working
at a lobbying firm and as a member of several corporate boards.
He went to Howard Law School and his civil rights resumé includes
positions with the NAACP, the National Urban League, the United
Negro College Fund and the Voter Education Project.
